The Birth of ReZolve
ReZolve first came to life in 1997 as Cornwall’s Waste Working Group. This group brought together a varied group of organisations who all had something to say about the waste created in Cornwall and the way that it was dealt with. The membership ranged from the NHS, Local Authorities and waste contractors to charities and local interest groups.
The work of the group, and the result of putting so many heads together, was groundbreaking and led to a strategy document known as the Green Book which set out the goal of achieving zero waste in Cornwall. The Green Book was a strategy which aimed high and although it didn’t give us all the answers it did suggest the basic elements that needed to be in place to make the dream a reality.
But the real legacy from the Group is ReZolve. ReZolve Kernow Ltd was formed to be the trading arm for the group with the ability to apply for grant funding. In its early years ReZolve was successful at winning bids to run exciting projects to help develop local markets for recycled materials, to raise awareness of recycling within the County and to promote washable nappies.
In subsequent years ReZolve has developed at what often feels like break-neck speed! We decided that whilst we know a lot about material waste we couldn’t ignore other environmental issues that also seemed to be caused by waste in one form or another. We realised that we were in an ideal position to focus on people as well as planet and we also had to accept that we couldn’t put all our eggs in one big basket labelled funding, we need to generate our own income!
ReZolve today sometimes seems like a completely different animal from when we first started, but we are proud to say that we still hold on to the same principles at heart, we still aim high and our vision today isn’t so different from when it all began…
